Menu Planning - Shopping

Before I jump into my shopping strategy,  I want to talk {well write} a bit about our specific meal plan.

We eat a whole foods diet. What that means is we {well, let's get real..I make all the meals} make all our meals from scratch.

We eat mostly vegetables,  fruits, and meats. Most of the sauces we use I also make from scratch...I mean, have you ever tried homemade salad dressing or ketchup?? Seriously...give 'em a try, and you will not go back. In fact, you can check out the ketchup recipe here.

The last several months B-Real has been seeing a Homeopathic doctor, who has changed up his diet several times. He has suffered with headaches and migraines for the last 5 to 6 years, and after years of getting no where with conventional medicine...we sought out something different.  He has only has 2 headaches since starting these new changes 2 months ago...he was getting 4 to 5 headaches or migraines a week before. So tell me again why healthy whole foods aren't considered medicines??? But I digress...

We have mostly cut dairy out of our diet, and years ago we had cut out "bad carbs" {refined sugars, breads, rice, white potatoes,  etc}. I still eat whole grains such as quinoa, oats, and some low carb bread occasionally. My diet mostly consists of vegetables and fruits. I have had digestive issues my entire life, and have a difficult time digesting meat. Don't get me wrong...I LOVE eating meat...but my body doesn't.  I seem to be able to handle chicken, venison,  turkey, and fish/shellfish. 75% of my day to day food intake is salad.

With these diets, it means that convenience or boxed meals are out.  This doesn't  mean that our meals are not easy. I prep vegetables for salad or fresh eating a couple different days a week. Our other meal vegetables are steamed or baked. I like to make large batches of cooked vegetables, as this saves me valuable time later when prepping meals.

So...on to the Shopping portion!

I am a prolific note taker, and an OBSESSIVE list maker...so I survive grocery shopping by making several lists.

First, I have my monthly meal plan laid out in from of me, and I make a list of all items that I will need to complete those meals.  I then check my inventory sheets {yeah, I am hard core, yo!} so I am not repeatedly purchasing the same things over & over again.

Next I go through each stores online ad, or check my perks {I use mPerks through Meijer's mainly, and occasionally use Kroger if I need to go there} for additional discounts.  I see nothing wrong with coupons, if you can use them for the things you buy...have at it folks.  I personally don't spend the time to do couponing.  To each their own.

For each weekly ad, I write down the prices of items advertised that I know I will be shopping for that trip.

I like to keep our food costs as low as possible, and since the majority of our grocery purchases are fresh vegetables & fruits...I want to get the best produce for the best price.

When I am going to go grocery shopping, I make sure that I have my lists.  I could probably put them on my phone...but I get so much satisfaction from crossing something off with a pen.

I start by going to Aldi's, and purchase as much as I can from my list there.  Aldi's has quite a few organic items {almost as much as bigger stores}, lots of produce, and the prices are much cheaper.  Just remember to take your reusable grocery bags...and a quarter to "rent" a cart.  Don't worry {for all you Aldi newbs}...you get the quarter back when you hook it back up in the corral.  :)

Keep in mind that with Aldi's, they are getting the lowest prices on items.  With the canned items, that is fine, but you need to be selective when it comes to the produce.  I have found that with our store, it is best to go on early or mid week...always avoid Sundays {the produce has usually maxed out it's freshness}, and the first of the month.  On a good day, I can get 90% of our groceries at Aldi's...but there will always be a couple items that I just can't find there.  One being natural peanut butter...Oh how I wish they would start carrying Smucker's Natural Peanut Butter.

Next, I stop off either at Kroger or Meijer, and pick up the rest of our goods.  Krogers carries more of the natural food products {Kombucha, brown rice powder, organic canned coconut milk} that we use; while Meijer has lots of great produce, and some of the organic packaged snacks that Squishy likes.

I understand stores vary by region, but these are the shops we frequent.

Next week I will post showing the price differences for one meal from various local stores.  I like to keep my eye on prices when I shop, even if I am not purchasing something that trip, it is nice to have an idea of price comparison.

First look

The Goods Lineup
{A couple of these bags are already in this photo...that's because B-Real got to the box before I did. He already knew that there was food in there since he had helped me pick the options out. He couldn't wait.}

Dried Pears

{When I start off by looking at the ingredients, and there is ONE item listed...I know it's going to be a good product for us! Ingredients: Pears Yep folks, that's all that there is in that bag...pears. They were really yummy...tasted just like off our pear tree in the back yard. My only complaint...some of them still had the stems on them. You should really be watching what you put in your mouth anyways, right?! ha! Two thumbs up on these. *This was one of my choices.}

Granny Smith Apples

{These were the same as the pears...one ingredient. They were really good. Tart just like fresh Granny Smith Apples. *This was a B-Real pick.}

Peppery Pistachios

{My favorite from the whole box. These were SOOOOOOO good! I wish I would've gotten a whole box of these times 10...seriously. I could eat these everyday. *This was B-Real's choice...but I would've picked them if he had not.}

South Pacific Plantains

{These were B-Reals favorite out of the whole box. He allowed me to have a couple of these, and I agree with him...they were really good. I've had cooked fresh plantains, and I really liked them. *This was a group choice.}

**These were the two bags that were opened before I got home to unbox this.**

Blueberry Almond Bites

{These were amazing! There are way too many carbs in them for me to get them on a regular basis, but they were so good. Intense blueberry flavor, hint of almond, and crunchy. *This was my choice.}

The Lowdown: This is such a good box for us! I love that the snacks are in a large size, plus you get to pick what you want. I'm not good at surprises {I'm totally the kid that would snoop at Christmas time and know ahead of time what I was getting...and then act surprised about what it was} ...and they have SOOO many options to choose from. I love the fact that there is a complete section of Non-GMO products to pick from. This is a win in my book just for that option!

The value is great IMO considering the quality of the products.

The Cost: $15 a month

The Goods: A Kase of 8 nutritional {snack} products each month.

 ~*~*~*~

Upon opening the box, you get a lovely bit of inspiration. Love!

The Goods Lineup

Caveman Cookies {2}

{I'm on the fence about these. I love that they are made from the simplest of ingredients...no refined sugar, just nuts/seeds/honey/fruit. I tried one, but it didn't grab me by the taste buds and scream...EAT ANOTHER ONE.}

Barbara Llewellyn Granola

{This was pretty good. I mixed it in my morning Greek yogurt. I have to say, I like my granola better...this was a little to sweet for me.}

Enjoy Life Seed & Fruit Mix

{This was a lovely addition to the 'pump bag mix'. It was sweet, but not too sweet. It doesn't have any nuts though.}

Pro Bar Bolt Organic Energy Chews

{This would be great if I was in training, and not breastfeeding. I try to stay away from things like this for now. I gave it to my friend Nancy, and haven't heard back yet about it.}

Body Glove Surge Gel

{I gave this to my friend Nancy. I haven't heard back yet if she's tried it.}

GarukaBars

{I am in LOVE with this bar...seriously. This is one of the best bars that I've had in a long time. I will be ordering more of these bars soon. You can request a sample bar of your own here.}

Health Warrior Chia Bar in Acai Berry

{I haven't tried this yet, but it's in the rotation for 'pump bag bars'. I did like reading about the company on the Kona Kase blog...they seem like a fun bunch. You can check out that post here.}

Perky Jerky in Turkey

{B-Real tried this, and really liked it. I'm not a jerky fan. I don't know if it gave him any more energy than other jerky, but he said it had great flavor and texture. That's a win in my book.}

~*~*~*~

The Lowdown: I think the overall value of this box is great, although not all the products fit my lifestyle.  I workout, but I'm training for a marathon...so the energy boost items don't really apply to me {I wouldn't take them even if I was training since I'm breastfeeding still}.

The customer service was A+ at Kona Kase, and Taylor is on the ball for sure! {I'm sure John is also, I've only had correspondence with Taylor :) }I think the concept of the Kona Kase is great, and it has introduced me to companies that I've never tried before.

Information on the inside lid about the company. Professional touch.

Unveiling...this baby is packed!

All the Goods!

~*~*~*~

 The Daily Crave Veggie Chips

{ The Daily Crave Veggie Chips weren't bad.  I had them with my lunch today...not super flavorful, but crunchy - which satisfied my craving for potato chips. }

Beanitos Bean Chips

{ These were pretty good.  I wish I would've had some guacamole/salsa/bean dip on hand to dip these in.  I'll be purchasing some of these for an upcoming party we're having. }

Just Tomatoes

{ Ummm...I love tomatoes, I mean LOOOOVE them.  I really didn't like these.  They were super sweet, but all they are is dehydrated tomatoes.  I prefer mine fresh.  B-Real hates tomatoes, so we gave them to his dad to try...still waiting to hear what he thinks of them. }

Lydia's Organics Rawkin' Beet Chips Spicy

{ These went directly to B-Real's dad with the Just Tomatoes bag.  Still waiting to hear about these from him. }

 Caveman Foods Nuts

{ I tried the Caveman Nuts - meh! I was super excited, because I love nuts.  The front photo shows tons of nuts, then in the corner just a smidge of sunflower seeds.  The pkg. said it would include cashews, macadamia nuts, walnuts, pistachios, and sunflower seeds.  Except for the 2 pistachios and 1 walnut...it was ALL sunflower seeds.  Don't get me wrong, I like sunflower seeds.  However this package should just read SUNFLOWER SEEDS, not NUTS. }

Hail Merry Macaroons Strawberry

{ B-Real & I both tried these - although he only ate 1/2 of one since they have so many carbs - and both of us liked them.  They aren't overly sweet, and you definitely taste the coconut in them.  We are a coconut oil household, so these were great.  I like the variety of items they have online as well.  If you get a chance to try these - do it!  Make sure you check out the bottom of the bag as well though, they have a really fun drawing on there! }

Nibnaks Crancherry Tart

{ These were really good...you can't go wrong with dried fruit though. }

Plum Organics Kids Mashups Berry

{ I LOVE Plum Organics!! I can't say enough about their products. They are the only store bought baby food I will give Squish.  She has loved everything I've given her - the Puffs, the Cremes, the Teething Biscuits.  I will wait to give her this since it has Strawberry in it. }

Gopal's Raw Brownie Original

{ I wanted to love this, I really did. Brownie...wha??? Of course I love brownies, and I even love GF brownies - that I make - but the "raw"-ness of this just didn't do it for me. I wish I had liked this more, I was really rooting for this one. }

Just Great Stuff Cacao + Acai Bar

{ I tried this bar the other afternoon while pumping for a little pick me up. I had skipped lunch - so I could pump - and was pretty hungry.  I don't think I'd pick this again, unless it was one of the only choices...but it wasn't bad.  I think I just didn't like the raw, gummy texture.  It was pretty tasty, although I would rather eat my nuts and fruit straight up. }

Gorge Delights Just Fruit Bar Pear Strawberry

{ This bar was pretty tasty! I typically have bars of all sorts stashed in my pump bag, and this is one that I might add to the mix.  }

The Lowdown: Customer service is A+ with this company.  The packaging, shipping, and design is impeccable.  Many of these items I've never heard of, or the company is new to me.  I really liked this box, even if I didn't like all the products.

I purchased this box as a one time box, but I'm thinking about signing up for their Starter box, and then gifting one to a friend.
